ISIS

Everything you need to know about ISIS . . . and don’t.

Current opinions about ISIS often suffer from a “politically correct” notion which focuses on this group’s ideology but ignores its strict Islamic theology. Releasing later this summer from Destiny Image Publishing, this book by Craig Evans and Jeremiah Johnston is hard-hitting, current, with a redemptive silver lining and offers what no other book does in evaluating ISIS in the current market — analysis of the Islamic theology driving the ideology of ISIS. Meanwhile, ISIS releases 90,000 social media messages per day luring Western youth.

Jesus and the Jihadis coming soon

The rise of the Islamic State (a.k.a. ISIS or ISIL) in the last two years and the atrocities this organization has committed have stunned the world. Child executioners, pre-teen wives, destruction of antiquities, crimes against humanity, genocide, killing science and progress, terror tweeting, torture, crucifixions, amputations, slavery all in the name of Allah carried out by the enthusiastic blessing of the Caliphate – the first self-styled, self-proclaimed Caliphate in nearly 100 years – characterize this violent movement. Most people in the West have no idea what to make of it. Western leaders have been taken completely by surprise. That this group is willing to kill and to kill brutally, to commit heinous acts against men, women, and children, is well known.

The West is confused, above all the United States where the current President remarked to The New Yorker that ISIS was a “jayvee” team in comparison to Al-Qaeda.  He even referred to ISIS as “un-Islamic,” ignoring ISIS’ strict adherence to their interpretation of the Holy Qur’an, Hadith and Sunna. Is this assessment correct? Is ISIS un-Islamic?

Today’s Christianity suffers due to a woefully inadequate understanding of the world’s second most populous religion, which is estimated at 1.6 billion Muslims globally. Christians are unaware that Jesus – only eclipsed by the Prophet Muhammad – plays a central role in Islamic eschatology.

We will guide the reader by the hand through the halls of history, showing how the violence and extremism of terrorist groups like ISIS are rooted in a deeply flawed understanding of God and the human condition.

Teaching Christians to Become Thinkers and Thinkers to Become Christians

Christian Thinkers Society welcomes HBU President Robert B. Sloan, Jr., to the Board of Directors

We are delighted to announce the unanimous appointment of Dr. Sloan to the CTS Board of Directors serving as a regular contributor, speaker and key architect in the ongoing movement. Sloan is known globally as prolific theologian and a great thinker, having a passion for both ministry and higher education, love for both the Church and the world, gifted by God with adept leadership skills to create transformation in cultures that are continually alienated from God. This is a very challenging time for Christians in this country and abroad. We live in a radically skeptical age and there are far too few people who can make the case for Christianity at the highest levels, let alone in their own back yard. Dr. Sloan’s ability to combine creative and communicative excellence with scholarly integrity will further buttress the mission of Christian Thinkers Society to inspire Christians and pastors to become thinkers and thinkers to become Christians. I encourage you to read Dr. Sloan’s bio, follow him on twitter, and like his Facebook page. Christian Thinkers Society is a Resident Institute of Houston Baptist University

CTS in Cuba with Global Baseball

Ministry Report

CTS Board Member and Vice President of Strategic Studies Professor Craig Evans returned Saturday May 2 after nine days of ministry in Cuba, which included surviving a hard-hitting tropical storm. Evans and the Global Baseball team, headed up by Jeff Siegel, who also works with Chosen People Ministries, distributed baseball equipment to dozens of boys and girls, worked out with them, and then organized and oversaw an exciting 6-inning game. Sunday morning Evans spoke in one of the local house churches and Sunday evening he spoke in a plenary session to an overflow crowd. Monday – Thursday Evans, Siegel, and LifeWay’s Philip Nation taught 50 house-church pastors and leaders. At the end of the week Nation baptized ten recent converts. Friday evening the team had dinner with Dr Rodrigo Alvarez Cambras and his 41 year old son Inti, whose is a well known artist in Cuba. All have become Christians in recent years. Dr Cambras was one of Fidel Castro’s top lieutenants during the “Revolution” that overthrew General Fulgencio Batista and established a one-party Communist state. Despite tight controls the Christian Church in Cuba is rapidly expanding. Even members of Castro’s household are coming to faith in Christ. Evans had hoped to meet briefly with Fidel Castro, but the former dictator’s health is not good. He did, however, have an amazing time with Fidel’s long-time friend and confidant Dr Cambras. The CTS team has been invited to return in November. This is an exciting ministry opportunity and CTS is delighted to be part of it.

IMG_4009Dr. Philip Nation writes: It was a great opportunity to partner with Global Baseball on our trip to Havana, Cuba. While there, we were able to meet with leaders from a network of house churches. Our team preached in local churches, led a communion service for the house church network gathering, and held four days of training for the house church leaders. By week’s end, I was blessed to baptize 8 new believers and train over 60 leaders in creating a discipleship model for their churches. As the winds of politics shift back and forth, I urge you to remember our brothers and sisters in Christ who labor in Cuba. Let us pray for a great movement of the gospel to sweep through their land.
