Caller: “My child committed suicide today” …

When I speak on effective engagement principles I usually begin with a Harvard Business Review article, “If you want people to listen, stop talking!” Listening is the key ingredient of an effective faith conversation. Listening requires time, and we usually don’t “have time” to stop for a question. It is amazing how our words, when we are not careful, get in the way of our conversation. Listening gives you the right to eventually be heard.

We have been in the midst of an epic Unanswered book tour featuring local church events and major media and I have been listening to hundreds of questions. The Unanswered tour is focused solely on answering your questions … and that is why it has gained so much traction.

Last Sunday night, I was honored to be interviewed on “Sunday Night Live” – KSBJ – Houston. There were so many callers they extended the interview from sixty to eighty minutes; however, I cannot stop thinking about the anonymous caller who asked for help because their family had experienced a suicide that very day. It reminded me, Jesus never flinched when someone asked him a question. Indeed, Jesus asked over 100 questions in the Gospels. All of us need to be more sensitive to the people and that means we need to become better listeners. – Jeremiah J. Johnston, Ph.D.
