CTS in Cuba with Global Baseball
Ministry Report
CTS Board Member and Vice President of Strategic Studies Professor Craig Evans returned Saturday May 2 after nine days of ministry in Cuba, which included surviving a hard-hitting tropical storm. Evans and the Global Baseball team, headed up by Jeff Siegel, who also works with Chosen People Ministries, distributed baseball equipment to dozens of boys and girls, worked out with them, and then organized and oversaw an exciting 6-inning game. Sunday morning Evans spoke in one of the local house churches and Sunday evening he spoke in a plenary session to an overflow crowd. Monday – Thursday Evans, Siegel, and LifeWay’s Philip Nation taught 50 house-church pastors and leaders. At the end of the week Nation baptized ten recent converts. Friday evening the team had dinner with Dr Rodrigo Alvarez Cambras and his 41 year old son Inti, whose is a well known artist in Cuba. All have become Christians in recent years. Dr Cambras was one of Fidel Castro’s top lieutenants during the “Revolution” that overthrew General Fulgencio Batista and established a one-party Communist state. Despite tight controls the Christian Church in Cuba is rapidly expanding. Even members of Castro’s household are coming to faith in Christ. Evans had hoped to meet briefly with Fidel Castro, but the former dictator’s health is not good. He did, however, have an amazing time with Fidel’s long-time friend and confidant Dr Cambras. The CTS team has been invited to return in November. This is an exciting ministry opportunity and CTS is delighted to be part of it.
Dr. Philip Nation writes: It was a great opportunity to partner with Global Baseball on our trip to Havana, Cuba. While there, we were able to meet with leaders from a network of house churches. Our team preached in local churches, led a communion service for the house church network gathering, and held four days of training for the house church leaders. By week’s end, I was blessed to baptize 8 new believers and train over 60 leaders in creating a discipleship model for their churches. As the winds of politics shift back and forth, I urge you to remember our brothers and sisters in Christ who labor in Cuba. Let us pray for a great movement of the gospel to sweep through their land.
